There are a few things you just don't do as a kid from Chicago. You don't put ketchup on a hot dog, and you definitely don't show up on Instagram in full Green Bay gear on Bears-Packers Sunday. Anthony Davis did the second one anyway, and Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III came to collect.
The Cheesehead Confession
According to The Sporting News, Davis posted an Instagram video before Sunday's rivalry game in full Packers gear. He challenged internet personality Dyon Brooks to a jersey bet: if Chicago lost, Brooks would wear Green Bay, and vice versa.
He even saw the backlash coming. "I know, I know, how can a guy from Chicago be a Packers fan?" Davis said in the video.
Great question, AD. We're still waiting on an answer that doesn't involve a foam cheese wedge.
The Sporting News notes that Davis has supported Green Bay for years, which has long irked Chicago fans who want him to back the city he grew up in. Bears fans flooded his comments. Then a Bears player showed up too.
Corn Emojis and "Champ"
The Packers won 31-7. Not long after, Burden dropped a corn emoji under Davis' post. Davis fired back: "Heard you ain't wanna play today champ!"
That was a shot borrowed from Packers linebacker Zaire Franklin, who told reporters after the game that Burden "quit today. He didn't wanna play no more." So Davis' best jab at a Bears player came from a Packers player's postgame quote. Even his trash talk is imported from Wisconsin.
Burden didn't fold. He reminded Davis that he led the Bears in receiving that day with four catches for 47 yards, then wrote, "Keep glazing cheese head." He followed that up with the line Chicago will be quoting all week: "take Chicago out [of your] bio."
The exchange went viral fast. One X post from OJ Muse ("Luther burden arguing with Anthony Davis I'm cryin") passed 1.3 million views and more than 18,000 likes.
Is Anthony Davis a Real Chicagoan?
Let's be fair for one paragraph. Davis grew up in Chicago, and nobody can take that from him. His Packers fandom isn't a new bandwagon either. By The Sporting News' account, it goes back years, so at least he's consistently wrong.
But look at the résumé. The South Side's own big man has played for New Orleans, Los Angeles, Dallas and now Washington. He has never suited up for the Bulls, and he cheers for the one NFL team Chicago is raised to resent. Somewhere a Bears fan is watching Burden's "take Chicago out your bio" comment on a loop and nodding.
For now, Davis gets the last laugh on the scoreboard. Per The Sporting News, Green Bay improved to 3-2 and sits in a tie with the Bears and Lions atop the NFC North. He'll be busy soon anyway: his first official season with the Wizards starts Oct. 21 against the Bucks.
The rematch is coming, AD. Chicago will remember, even if your bio doesn't.
