Looks like your late-night Frosty run might be getting a little longer for some folks! Fast-food giant Wendy’s is in the midst of a major shake-up, reportedly shuttering hundreds of its U.S. locations this year. The company is on a mission to ditch underperforming restaurants and boost its bottom line, which means less convenient access to those beloved square patties for a good chunk of the country.
This isn't exactly fresh news, as Wendy's first spilled the beans on this streamlining strategy back in November 2025 during an investor call. But now, nearly six months later, we're starting to see the real-world impact. According to a deep dive into Wendy's own store locator tool, their U.S. footprint is significantly smaller. We're talking double-digit declines in several states, folks!
As of a recent Friday check-in, the online tool showed a mere 5,675 Wendy's operating across the United States. If you rewind to the end of September 2025, an archived version of that same tool listed approximately 200 more locations. So, yeah, the closure plan is definitely in full swing!
The Wendy's Company, who unveiled this "turnaround plan" to the world, had stated that these closures would kick off in the fourth quarter of 2025. And based on those archived numbers (which showed 5,875 U.S. locations at the start of that quarter), they weren't kidding around.
Now, a quick disclaimer for all you number crunchers out there: these figures are straight from Wendy's public-facing website, not their official financial filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC reports tend to be a little different, usually listing a slightly higher number. For instance, as of September 27 of last year, the company officially reported 5,979 U.S. restaurants. That’s dozens more than what their own online locator was showing at the same time!
Why the discrepancy? Good question! Wendy's hasn't commented on the matter, so we're left to wonder if it's a lag in updating the public tool, or perhaps something more. Regardless, the takeaway is clear: if you're a devoted Wendy's fan, you might want to double-check their locator before you head out for that Baconator — it might not be there anymore!
