Hold onto your sangrias, folks, because things just got wild down in Ceuta! The tiny Spanish territory, nestled right on the Moroccan coast, was absolutely swamped on Thursday as thousands of migrants stormed its borders. We're talking fences collapsed, people swimming across, and local officials practically begging Spain to declare a national emergency. Get ready for the tea, because this is some serious drama.
Apparently, the Spanish government is already scrambling, deploying military units to back up the sorely outnumbered police in Ceuta. Rachid Sbihi, who heads the association representing the Civil Guard officers policing the border, didn't mince words. "The situation is absolute chaos," he declared. He couldn't even give a solid number, but he confirmed it was "thousands of migrants crossing" and that the border had "totally collapsed." Can you imagine?
The footage is absolutely bonkers. We're seeing hundreds of people, predominantly Moroccans, practically swimming their way over from the Moroccan side of the Tarajal border. They were using everything from inflatable inner tubes to random flotation devices. Others just straight-up smashed through a gate in the fence and ran straight into the city. And get this – as they overran the border, these folks were shouting "Viva España!" Talk about a dramatic entrance!
But it wasn't all cheers and breakthroughs. Tragically, at least three people lost their lives trying to swim to Ceuta, according to Sbihi and other activists.
Now, Spain's Interior Ministry is trying to project an air of control, claiming the Moroccan government is "closely cooperating" to handle the breach. They're even saying Moroccan police are already working to prevent "numerous people" from getting through. We'll see about that.
To try and curb the seemingly endless tide of people, Spain is sending in some serious backup. By Friday, three platoons of 20 soldiers each, a diving unit, and even a military vessel are set to be deployed. And just to show how serious they are, Spanish interior minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska is making a special trip to Ceuta on Friday to check out the situation for himself. Both countries have apparently agreed to work together to return "all the people who entered Ceuta illegally" "as soon as possible." Good luck with that, we say.
Achraf Maimouni from the Moroccan Association for Human Rights is calling the whole thing "exceptional." He noted that the Tarajal border basically just opened up "under unusual circumstances" that morning, and people just... crossed. Sounds like an understatement of the year, if you ask us.
And because no international incident is complete without a hot take from the White House, they've weighed in, naturally. White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly wasted no time in blaming Europe's "far-left, globalist policies" for the whole mess. She channeled her inner President Trump, saying he's "long warned Europe what would happen if they continue to implement far-left, globalist policies, including enabling mass migration." She even issued a dire warning: "Spain and other countries who have adopted this destructive philosophy should immediately reverse course or risk their own demise." Yikes!
This isn't the first rodeo for Ceuta, either. Back in 2021, around 10,000 people from Morocco and other parts of Africa also managed to overrun the territory. Looks like history, or at least a highly dramatic version of it, is repeating itself. Stay tuned, because this story is far from over!
