Caleb Williams’ Week 2 just turned into a hamstring cliffhanger, buttercups.
The Bears quarterback left Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings in the middle of the fourth quarter after a right hamstring injury on a scramble near the goal line. Chicago officially ruled him out late, and the Vikings walked out of rainy Soldier Field with a 9-3 win in a slog of an NFC North defensive battle.
The play: first-and-goal at Minnesota’s 6, play-action, Williams rolling left. Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman got into the mix, Williams went down in clear pain, and he couldn’t put weight on the leg as trainers helped him off. He was carted to the locker room with a towel over his head — then gave the crowd a thumbs-up once it came off, looking emotional but upright enough for the gesture.
Tyson Bagent took over. Chicago couldn’t finish the drive the way it needed, and Minnesota left with the division win. Final line for Williams before he exited: 15-of-26 for 138 yards and an interception, plus five carries for 42 yards — a long way from his Week 1 explosion against Carolina (269 pass yards, two pass TDs, two rush TDs in a 59-point Bears party).
After the game, Bears head coach Ben Johnson said Williams is “in good spirits,” and that they won’t know how serious it is until Monday. That’s the update that matters for fantasy managers, Chicago’s offense, and anyone watching next week’s home date with the Eagles — where Bagent may be under center if Monday’s imaging isn’t kind.
Also dinged: Bears DB Tyrique Stevenson left with a hamstring of his own and didn’t return.
Buttercups: from 59-point fireworks to a cart ride in seven days. Monday’s the real scoreboard.
