San Francisco gets the first week, but Los Angeles gets the afterparty. LA Tech Week, presented by a16z, runs Monday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct. 18, and the official calendar is stacked with 794 events. In the site's own words, "Los Angeles picks up where SF leaves off."

There's no convention center and no single badge. Tech Week calls itself "a decentralized tech conference presented by a16z," which means every event is run by a different startup, fund or company. The Westside is the epicenter: roughly 200 events in Santa Monica and close to 100 in Venice, with Downtown (67), Culver City (48) and Beverly Hills (36) close behind, plus 39 virtual sessions for anyone avoiding the 405.

How to Get In

The calendar's pitch is simple: "Pick your events, apply, and get in." Every event has its own page, and you apply or RSVP one by one. Hosts screen the list and let you know if you're approved. Listings only show the neighborhood, and the exact address goes to confirmed guests closer to the date. A few events are ticketed and some are already waitlisted, so apply early and apply to more than you think you need.
